A message from the Chancellor:
The joy and excitement of arts education creates an enormously powerful inducement for young people to come to school, stay in school and excel in school. Using the arts in the classroom draws on all learning methods that aid children to understand and process information. In the New York City school system, we have come to appreciate again the power of the arts to develop children's verbal expression and their direct relationship to my number one priority, early childhood literacy. Our continuing work to restore arts education through Project ARTS provides New York City's public school children with a great opportunity to learn more about how their talents and interests can lead them to productive adulthood. We are bringing back arts education not only to give our students the complete education they deserve, but also to provide our young people with access to the multitude of meaningful career opportunities in the arts that exist in our city, the arts capital of the world. Arts Education Week is an important celebration of the arts education that is already in place in our schools and the extraordinary potential that lies ahead. Rudolph F.
